Abstract

In 1985, the Supreme Court maintained that, under the privileges and immunities clause, a state cannot discriminate against a non-resident attorney. Supreme Court of New Hampshire v. Piper, 105 S. Ct. 1272 (1985). Recently, at Friedman v. Supreme Court of Virginia, the court demolished all remaining vestiges of residency requirements. 108 S. Ct. 2260 (1988).

Almost all states require an applicant to be at least twenty-one years old to be admitted. In practice, rigid education requirements have reduced the effect of age requirement to nullity. Recently, a federal district court maintained the New York age requirement, demonstrating that an age limit can be rationally used as a way to measure maturity. Baccus v. Karger, 692 F. Supp. 290 S.D.N.Y. (1988).
