Ramsay Hunt Paralysis: Bibliographic Review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Herpes zoster or Ramsay Hunt syndrome is described by acute facial paralysis, vestibuloclear dysfunction and eruption in the external auditory canal, due to reactivation of the varicellazoster virus at the level of the geniculate ganglion. The increase in its incidence is directly related to the age of the patient. A detailed clinical history and an adequate physical examination are essential to determine the type of paralysis that the patient presents and make an early diagnosis. The use of the combination therapy of a corticosteroid plus an antiviral within the first 72 hours of established symptoms is the therapeutic regimen that has shown the best recovery rates. Their prognosis is influenced by factors such as age, presence of comorbidities and time elapsed since the onset of symptoms at the beginning of treatment.
