Testosterone Replacement Therapy in Patients with Prostate Cancer
Main Article Content
Abstract
Testosterone is an important hormone for the proper maintenance of health. Consequently, hypogonadism is a condition that diminishes the quality of life of those who suffer from it and can affect multiple domains. Hypogonadism is more prevalent in older men and due to the association between the increase in the incidence of prostate cancer and the increase in age, patients at higher risk of prostate cancer in turn have the highest risk to develop hypogonadism. The antecedent of prostate cancer was considered an absolute contraindication for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), however recent studies have shown that its use may be safer than previously assumed. Due to the discussion on the use of TRT, the high prevalence of hypogonadism and its effect on the quality of life, this article will address the evidence that exists about TRT in patients with prostate cancer.
